About

Hadassah College Jerusalem together with the educational website Snunit has joined forces to bring to light some of the rich legacy photographers of Jerusalem have left us. Surprisingly, up until now there was no website that presented their important work. We have chosen to begin with photographers of the first half of the 20th century; the time of Tsadok Bassan, the first Jewish photographer born in Israel, and others of his time. We have still a long road ahead of us before we include in our website all of Jerusalem's photographers, however, we believe that even this humble beginning enables us to appreciate the quality of their work, artistically and visually, and their tremendous contribution to the documentation of Jerusalem's history.

Initially the website will present a collection of photographs taken by Yaccov Ben-Dov, Yaacov Benor Kalter, Werner Braun, Alfred Bernheim, Hans Lehmann, Shlomo and Sonia Narinsky, and as previously mentioned, Tsadok Bassan. Our intention is to expand the site and present even more photographers of the same period as Aliza Holtz, Zvi Oron (Orushkes), Yithak Berlind, Walter Zadek, Falu Zivlin, Zoltan Kluger and others. Likewise, we would like to introduce photography of the second half of the century, to broaden our acquaintance with the transformations that took place in Jerusalem and with the way it has been documented and viewed through time.

The website is divided into categories and photographers. Choosing to present it both ways, allows us to demonstrate how a specific category is photographed in various lenses, and how a specific photographer chooses to document all of his subjects. Hence, we are able to examine transformations and trends from a collective point of view as well as from an individual perspective, including the personal details, observance and nuances of each.

We are thankful to the institutes, key people and private sources that have been recruited to assist us into making this project possible.  They provided us with information, good advice and permitted us to publicize the photographs. Without their help we could not have launched this project. Last but not least, we would like to thank an anonymous donor, who not only provided us with the means needed to establish the website, but has initiated and promoted it.
